My 13-year-old vision for where I’d be by now

College after high school: Check!

Medium sized, public college a state or two away: Kind of check. I went to a small, private college associated with my church and couldn’t be happier with my choice! I made incredible, life-long friends and had unforgettable experiences. I was correct in my prediction of going to college a state or two away from home though.

My roommate (who remains a close friend) posted this in good humor during the first week of school with the caption: “just got to college… and found out my roommate’s a freak.

Choir, track, acting and volunteering in college: Half check. I was not a part of choir and the most running I did was a few miles at a time solo. However, I was spot on about acting and volunteering. My school had amazing volunteer opportunities that I had a blast participating in. And acting! I was part of the school’s Easter pageant, which was a live walk-through skit telling Jesus’ life story.

We had waves of audience members walk through at certain time intervals, so we acted out the same scene about 15 times total while the audience groups followed their Jesus’ actor (we had 3 Jesuses) through all the scenes.  I played the disciple John’s mother at the last supper and had my own monologue! (That’s me in the blue headdress.)

I also talked my boyfriend into being Joseph to my Mary in a live outdoor walk-through Christmas pageant! Luckily, we had a doll to play baby Jesus.

Studying something in art: Check! Though I majored in communications with an emphasis in journalism, I did minor in graphic design AND…drum roll …art! My 13-year old self knew me so well! Here’s a picture I snapped during an oil painting class:

So, apparently I’ve only surprised young Brianna slightly when it comes to my college experience. I have pages more of my 13-year old relationship, home-owning and career goals, but those parts of my life are still playing out. We’ll see how close my predictions are…

Did you have any life goals that you set as a kid? If so, did they turn out true or not so much? I’d love to know in a comment below!

  1. I love this post! As a child (and teenager, and secretly an adult too) I always wanted to be a wedding dress designer and interior designer. One of the two actually happened so I can’t complain. Although I still do break out the doodle pad every once in a while and sketch bridal dresses when I’m home alone. 🙂
